Brindisi

A bridge between the Via Appia and the Via Traiana

Brindisi is a charming city located on the Adriatic coast of Puglia. With a two-thousand-year history, it has its roots in an ancient past and represents an authentic treasure of art, history, traditions, culture and gastronomy, which immediately captures the attention of anyone who visits it.

It was an important land terminal towards the East during the Roman Empire thanks to its strategic port. The columns of the Appian Way, dating back to the 2nd century and symbols of the city, bear witness to this history. Today, only one of the two columns remains intact.

The Arch of Trajan is another symbol of Brindisi, a majestic triumphal arch erected in honor of the emperor Trajan. This monument represents a magnificent example of Roman architecture and underlines its historical grandeur. Brindisi's monumental heritage is notable and includes the "Forte a Mare," a fortress built in 1491 on the island in front of the port, and the Castello Svevo, commissioned by Frederick II in 1227 and now used by the Italian Navy.

The historic center of Brindisi, partly enclosed by the Aragonese walls, is home to the suggestive district of San Pietro degli Schiavoni, with an archaeological area from the Roman era. The seafront is a favorite and leads to the fishing village, which showcases the colors and tradition of the sea craft.

Brindisi is also a city steeped in Apulian traditions and culture. The Feast of San Teodoro is a key event, characterized by a solemn religious procession and traditional shows that attract visitors from every corner of the region. The Taranta dance, typical of Puglia, is an essential part of the local culture and is celebrated at various music festivals during the summer.
